## Power supply: the foundation of outstanding sound reproduction

Domestic mains power is far from ideal for high-end audio. Nearby appliances, LED lighting and switching chargers generate electromagnetic interference that travels through the electrical network. These disturbances can affect musical performance in a high-quality hi-fi system, where every detail matters.

Isolation between outlets is crucial. Star wiring from the mains input to each socket helps prevent interactions between components. Many general-purpose power strips use daisy-chain wiring that can create unwanted ground paths and affect sound quality.

Enclosure shielding against electromagnetic interference is also essential. A plastic or wooden enclosure, however attractive, does not provide the same shielding. A properly designed aluminium enclosure can act as an effective Faraday cage.

Component quality inside the unit also makes a difference. Audiophile-grade outlets, high-purity conductors and carefully made solder joints support reliable conductivity over time. Lower-cost strips often use less refined materials and construction behind an attractive exterior.

If adding a power strip has not brought a clear, immediately audible improvement to your system, it may be because many products marketed as audiophile accessories do not meet these essential design criteria.
